Vinegar Tom

by Caryl Churchill

April 30 & May 1-3, 2009
Maintenance Shop, Memorial Union

The feminist play examines gender and power relationships through the lens of 17th century witchcraft trials in England. "Vinegar Tom" follows the story of a girl/prostitute in her 20s in a small village. The plot includes much witchcraft, some slating o the Christian faith at that time, and the clear discrimination of women.

The play includes non-realistic use of songs that all reflect in one way or another, the discrimation of women and men's control of society. The play also outlines societies rejection of people with differences and how men shape what a woman is, and how it all still goes on today.

ISU Theatre hosted the Kennedy Center Festival in January 2007.
