Robert Sunderman
Robert Sunderman the Resident Scenic Designer and Associate Professor
of Scenic Design and Technical Theatre joined the ISU faculty in the
fall of 2000. He received his MFA, MA and BFA in Fine Arts from the
University of Iowa. Rob before coming to ISU was the scenic designer
and technical director at Iowa Public Television for sixteen years,
which produced regional and national shows. He also designed for many
regional video companies throughout the Midwest. Rob has received four
Iowa Film Awards and a National Broadcasting Designers Award. Robert
won a Kennedy Center American Collage Theatre Festival Meritorious Achievement
Award for scenic design of the production of Twelfth Night in 2001 and
of Proof in 2003 at ISU. During 2003 he received a Kennedy Center faculty
summer fellowship in scenic design from region V of the Kennedy Center
American College Theatre Festival and then attended an intensive Master
class with distinguished and nationally renowned Scenic Designer Ming
Cho Lee at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Rob is a member of
KC/ACTF and USITT.
This coming season for Iowa State University Theatre he will be scenic
designing "The Marriage of Figaro", "Arcadia", and
"The Music Man". The summer of 2007 Rob will be redesigning
a number of sets for Iowa Public Television.
Robert is also a fine artist that works in many 2D and 3D mediums. He
has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and is a faculty
member of the Des Moines Art Center teaching Small Sculpture and Jewelry
courses. In the fall of 2003 he was one of 300 artists from the United
State to design a Christmas tree ornament for the White House Christmas
tree. He has also received a number of awards for his fine art. He is
a member of SNAG and ACC. Rob continues to exhibit around the country.
