The Misanthrope
by Moliere
A new adaptation by Neil Bartlett
March 26-28, 1999
Alceste has become so bitter in his opposition to the
superficiality and hypocrisy of society that he wishes to withdraw
from the world. Moliere's great comedy reveals Alceste's justification
in criticizing his society with its slandering gossips, fops, and
artificial poets while at the same time exposing his excessive intolerance
and obsession with mankind's faults. Neil Barlett's adaptation,
which has been produced to great critical and popular acclaim at
the LaJolla Playhouse and Chicago's Goodman Theater, re-sets the
play in the vapid world of Hollywood power brokers, divas and gossip-mongers
without sacrificing Moliere's comic verse.
