Les Liaisons Dangereuses
by Christopher Hampton
From the novel by Choderlos de Laclos
February 18-20, 25-27, 2000
Fisher Theater
Set in France among aristocrats before the revolution,
this is a play for all times about sexual manners and manipulation.
Craving revenge on the man who jilted her, the wicked Marquise de
Merteuil persuades a former lover, the rakish Valmont, to deflower
the man's young fiancée, known for her unshakable fidelity.
The cold-blooded two-some proceed gleefully with their heartless
scheme - until true love unexpectedly alters the course of events.
In the two hundred years since its original publication, Les Liaisons
Dangereuses has provoked, on the one hand, shock and censorship,
and on the other, the admiration of readers as different as Marie
Antoinette, Andre Gide, and Charles Baudelaire.
