Barjche 2005

Orchesis I

February 10-13, 2005
Fisher Theater

Barjche 2005, (pronounced Bar-shay) is a modern dance concert produced by Iowa State students who are members of Orchesis I, Iowa State's modern dance club. Students not only perform in the concert, but also are choreographers, lighting designers, costume designers, stage managers and part of the stage crew.

This year's Barjche (pronounced Bar-shay) features the talent of more than 40 student members of Orchesis I performing the original work created by nine student choreographers, two dance faculty and the work of one professional choreographer from Boulder, Colorado.

Orchesis I student choreographers and members come from a plethora of majors ranging from theater and dance to chemistry, computer science, animal ecology, journalism, fashion design, engineering, etc. All of these different majors combined provide an eclectic performance of choreographic ideas.

Teal Larsen, senior in performing arts, drew her choreographic inspiration from painter, Robert Rauschenberg. Her piece entitled "Daughters of Rauschenberg" involves six women performing intriguing choreography that takes place in and around a large set piece made out of Plexiglas and steel that Larsen designed and built. Creating movement based art as well as visual art; Larsen's piece allows the dancers to paint the Plexiglas each night of the performance creating something entirely new and different every time it is performed.

Do you ever feel as though you have seen something or been somewhere before, but you know you haven't? Some people call this déjà vu. Jennifer Karabatsos, senior in animal ecology, takes this idea and her experiences with it and creates a piece using this concept.

Guest artist, Kim Olson, artistic director of her own professional company, Kim Olson/Sweet Edge in Boulder, Colorado creates a rousing new work based on relationships and the movement concept of momentum. Her use of stage space, abstract gestures and fascinating partner work create a piece that will not soon be forgotten.

A diverse performance created by the collaborative efforts of over 65 individuals, Barjche 2005, is sure to have something in it for all who attend this year's performance.
